Health Science Certification Opportunities

Harlingen CISD is partnered with the National Healthcareer Association (NHA), the State Board of Dental Examiners, the Texas Department of State Health Services EMS Division, and the Texas Board of Nursing to give their students the opportunity to be trained and certified in the following healthcare certifications:

  • Registered Dental Assistant (RDA)

  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA)

  • Certified EKG Technician (EKG)

  • Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPT)

  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)

  • Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN)

If you would like detailed information on each of these certifications, click here and scroll down until you find the Health Science Academy.

These certification programs are offered at the Harlingen School of Health Professions. This school has students from 8th-12th grades. If a student is interested in attending this school and completing one of the certification programs, students usually apply in the 7th grade, but some applications are still accepted in the 8th and 9th grades. A few things included in the application process include, but are not limited to: an updated resume, an interview with teacher, a reference letter, a drug screening, and updated immunizations.

Dual Enrollment

Harlingen CISD is partnered with Texas State Technical College, Texas Southmost College and the University of Texas – Rio Grande Valley to offer a variety of dual enrollment courses for all of their students. These institutions offer courses at different Harlingen CISD locations. They offer courses at Harlingen High School, Harlingen High School South, Early College High School, and the Harlingen School of Health Professions. For the programs or courses that cannot be taught on their campuses, Harlingen CISD provides transportation to and from the institutions themselves.

AP Courses

Harlingen CISD also offers Advanced Placement (AP) courses for their students. The AP and Pre-AP Program at HCISD provides an opportunity for students to pursue a rigorous course of study by enrolling in Pre-AP and AP courses. It also provides a chance for students to receive credit for college-level coursework by taking and scoring the appropriate score on an AP exam. The AP Program, sponsored and governed by the College Board, is based on the premise that college-level material can successfully be learned by well-prepared secondary students.
