Health Science Certification Opportunities 

La Joya ISD is partnered with South Texas College and RGV Vocational Services to provide opportunities for students to gain healthcare certifications. La Joya ISD hosts most of these programs at their Academy of Health Sciences – STEM campus.  All La Joya ISD students are given the opportunity to gain a certification, not just the students that are enrolled into the academy. The health science certification opportunities available to students at La Joya ISD are listed below.

  • Patient Care Technician – South Texas College  

  • Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) certification 

  • Electrocardiogram Technician (EKG) certification 

  • Alzheimer’s/Senior Care certification 

  • Phlebotomy certification 

  • Patient Care Technician certification 


  • Patient Care Technician – RGV Vocational Services 

  • Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) certification 

  • Electrocardiogram Technician (EKG) certification 

  • Phlebotomy certification 


  • Medical Assistant – RGV Vocational Services 

  • Medical Coding and Billing certification

Students who are interested in completing these certifications must apply in either 10th or 11th grade. There are a limited number of spots for certain programs. The application process includes a paper application that is submitted to a committee who reviews and assigns students to program spots. There are several factors that are taken into consideration when assigning these spots including: recommendation letters, a personal essay, grades, attendance, TSI scores, personal commitment and attitude.  






Dual Enrollment 

La Joya ISD is partnered with both South Texas College and the University of Texas - Rio Grande Valley to provide dual enrollment courses for their students. Through these partnerships, La Joya ISD students are able to complete the prerequisite coursework for the Associate Degree in Nursing program at South Texas College and many of the prerequisite coursework for Bachelor of Nursing Degree Programs.  Students can also choose to pursue an Associate Degree with South Texas College in areas such as biology and chemistry.   






AP Courses 

La Joya ISD also offers Advanced Placement (AP) courses. AP courses are classes that include an advanced placement exam at the end of the course. If a student earns a high enough score one of these exams, some colleges and universities will grant them college credit aligned with that course. AP courses offered to La Joya ISD students include:
